The Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden on the campus of California State university, Long Beach, is a lovely place to visit in any season. Autumn, however, brings a special opportunity to enjoy the garden bathed in the beauty of kiku, chrysanthemums.

For two days only, during the annual Chrysanthemum Show on Saturday, October 25, from 9 a.m.- 2 p.m., and on Sunday, October 26, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., visitors can appreciate the splendor of the majestic chrysanthemum in the Japanese Garden setting.

The EBM Japanese Garden celebrates the fusion of traditional Japanese and western cultures.  The design of the flowers to be placed in the garden this year was inspired by photographs of chrysanthemum displays from the Meiji and Taisho periods as well as images of Victorian chrysanthemum flower shows, many initially inspired by contact with Japan after their self-imposed two centuries of isolation.

Chrysanthemums will be placed throughout the garden creating spectacular views of cascade, disbud, and topiary style flower displays within the formal garden.

Visitors will also be awed by hundreds of award-winning chrysanthemum flowers in the nationally juried Chrysanthemum Society of Orange County flower show held in the side garden. Blooms larger than your hand, along with mums the size of a candy drops will speak to the endless variety of the chrysanthemum, also known as the queen of flowers.

The event will incorporate all of your senses, including taste.  The art of tea tasting will be explored with a variety of fine teas.  Stroll through the garden surrounded by vibrant fall colors, then pause and take a moment to savor a delicious cup, or two, of Den's Tea.

Enjoy fine art instruction inspired by the beauty of the chrysanthemum.  Art tchniques including aquarelle and photo tinting will take place along the edge of the garden pond, lined with chrysanthemums and teaming with a brocade of colored koi fish.

Extraordinary varieties of mums, including cut and potted plants, will be available for purchase throughout the two day event at reasonable prices.

The event is made possible by the following groups: Long Beach City College, the Friends of the Japanese Garden, Den' s Tea, Mazuri, Color Spot Nurseries and the Chrysanthemum Society of Orange County.

Admission to the event is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and $5 for Japanese Garden members. Children 12 and under will be admitted free.
